Botox: Commonly Asked Questions
Is Botox for me?
The best candidates for Botox treatment are men and women who are physically healthy and realistic in their expectations. Most are thirty years old or older, but you may decide to have this procedure at a younger age in order to prevent premature wrinkles from appearing.
How does Botox work?
Botox works by paralyzing the small muscles that are responsible for many of the wrinkles of the face. When Botox is injected into a muscle, it blocks the nerve impulse from reaching that area, and as a result, the muscle weakens. Botox corrects underlying muscles, as opposed to the skin’s surface or sub-layer the way peels do, for longer-lasting results.
How is Botox administered?
A few drops of Botox are injected with a tiny needle into the muscle that creates a wrinkle.
Do the injections hurt?
When Botox is injected there is an initial minor sting for a few seconds. Once the injection is complete, there is usually no discomfort. No sedation or anesthetic is needed.
Is Botox Safe?
This procedure is one of the safest available for reduction of wrinkles. Botox has been used safely and successfully in ophthalmology for over twelve years and for wrinkle therapy for almost ten years. It has been approved by the FDA for neurological disorders.
Will Botox affect my facial expressions?
Botox treatment does not effect normal facial expressions. In the amounts used for wrinkle therapy, the only possible side effects are temporary and localized to the area of injection.
Will I see immediate results?
Dramatic results are often seen within a few days. Occasionally, there is no improvement and another form of treatment may be required.
Are the effects permanent?
The results are in most cases somewhat temporary and may need to be repeated after 3 to 6 months.
